Unaware that ferry arrival at almost midnight was at a cargo terminal, miles from anywhere, no taxis but helped by kind crew member. Nervous as solo traveller but most accommodating receptionist guided me by phone into stay. Tramline on waterfront easy access to station.
Only stopping point to Palermo - can’t judge attractions.

Messina is a pretty city in a beautiful spot that is off the radar for most travelers.
The cathedral, rebuilt after the 1908 earthquake, is beautiful, with Byzantine mosaics in the apses that miraculously survived. The clock tower mechanical clock is spectacular even though it only operates once a day.
The regional museum is full of treasures that were salvaged from churches destroyed in the earthquake. The highlights are two Caravaggios and an Antonello da Messina triptych.
Interestingly, Messina appears not to promote itself. The tourist office seemed to always be closed. I ended up asking in shops what sights to see, how to get to them on busses, and for restaurant recommendations. Locals were very glad to help me with that information.

we stayed 4 nights, allowing enough time t spend in Messina as well as use it as a base to travel to other Sicily locations. it had great walkability although the sidewalks/curbs were a little challenging with a suitcase. the noon Duomo show was definitely a highlight

The town is Ok for a day & night.
The town is Ok for a day & night. The cathedral at 12pm is the biggest thing in town and it is worth a look for the curious. Note all the bars around the square have a surcharge just to sit down - which they don't advertise. Try the Sri Lankan restaurants around town, delicious food at a great price.

we only stayed 3 nights, the area we stayed was very busy not far from ferry crossings. We visited Taormina and Cefalu, 2 nearby cities. Didn't get to see much of Messina itself. Did visit beach which was very nice.

Messina doesn't have a lot of attractions - the Camponile was interesting to see at midday, as well as the Norman cathedral, for which you could really see the Mudejar influence - something I found surprising for Italy.
OTOH, it also means there were fewer tourists about, which suited us to a tee.
If you are into hiking, it looks like the mountains above the city would have some nice trails with views out over both the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas.
The B&B is centrally situated, just a few steps away the Dome and it has everything you need. The room was spacious and very comfortable. Jonathan was very polite, kind and ready to assist. They kept our luggage while we were exploring the city which we truly appreciated. Bed very comfortable and loved the sheets. Big bathroom with all the amenities. Definitely a perfect place to explore the city. Loved the fresh Sicilian lemons and Jonathan was super kind to give us some to take away. We'd chose it again for a stay in Messina.
We had everything that we needed and was very clean. The bed is big and comfortable. Allessandro was very helpful and replied fast for any question that we had, even about the road taxes in Sicily, where I struggled at. The neighborhood is quiet. The kitchen is on the same level but in other apartment and it is well equipped. Historical center can be reached with the personal car in approx 10-15 min. I highly recommend. Free parking spots can be found very easy next to the facility.
Exactly what I needed for Messina, as I wanted to stay in front of the promenade. Clean and spacious room, lovely balcony, cute breakfast, the lady that I met in the morning was very friendly. I parked my car exactly in front of the building, that was very convenient and it is free-white colored line. If u are hungry, try the pizza restaurant 50m on your left hand side, as you get out of the property :P I will go back to Blue Mediterraneo soon!
What a little gem of a hotel with a great location 5mins walk from Train/Ferry port and 5 mins to the main square with plenty of places to eat and drink.
Staff were super helpful and whilst I was embarrassed to not speak Italian their English was perfect.
Can't recommend the hotel and the staff enough!!
Great place near the cathedral and close to the harbour. Very friendly staff. And a great concept for breakfast: order the day before what you want to eat and get served at your place. This is great and safes a lot of food wasted on the always too big buffets in other hotels.
It is so close to the station but yet close to the centre. Beds were super comfy and the breakfast was really good. It is a proper hotel and I appreciate to be able to rest in a proper place, as all the rest of places in Sicily were b and bs... This was great.
Francisco is a fabulous host, very personable, friendly and helpful. There are only two rooms, so it feels like you are staying with family. Great value in an awesome location, close enough to Messina, but out in the country by the sea.
Easy and fast communication with the host via WhatsApp.
Apartment location is good, close to supermarket, restaurants and beach in a suburb of Messina.
We enjoyed a bit of beach time and explored the nearby restaurants at dinner.
Location
Best water pressure in Europe! Great coffee & kitchen facilities.
Carmelo is extremely responsive & accommodating.
First floor, no stairs is a plus. Would stay here again if ever in Messina.
Fantastic location in the centre of Messina and easy to walk to everything. There were great food options very close by. The rooms were very clean and spacious and the shower was amazing!!
Great location, well equipped kitchen, there was heating, which is rare in Sicily and when outside is +7 it is nice to have warm apartment and also good internet to work.
The hotel was clean and modern and reception Mr Giovanni was so helpful and kind.
Everything was perfect!
However you should aware messina isn’t a tourist place.
Everything- it is a quality hotel for a great price - located close to train station (5 minute walk), clean large room with friendly staff and a great breakfast!
